Jayden Daniels sent LSU a cease and desist over his No. 5 jersey — but the part nobody is covering is that he already blocked this exact move two years ago. 

Former LSU coach Brian Kelly told ESPN that DJ Pickett was promised No. 5 during his recruitment in 2024, and that Kelly never issued it because Jayden Daniels would not approve it. Kelly was fired in October 2025. New head coach Lane Kiffin honored the promise, Pickett switched from No. 3 to No. 5 when fall camp opened on August 5, and that same day an attorney for Daniels informed LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry that the school can no longer use his name, image and likeness. 

Here is what almost nobody has checked: under LSU's own published policy, an athlete cannot even be nominated for jersey retirement until five full years after finishing competition. Daniels last played in 2023, which makes him eligible in 2028. And under a bylaw LSU established on January 1, 2007, retiring a jersey does not stop a current player from wearing that number anyway — that call belongs to the head coach. 

DJ Pickett says he has worn No. 5 since he was four years old and has no plans to switch. His father told Nola.com the family found out about the letter by reading ESPN.
