Kyler Murray has been named the Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback for 2026, and J.J. McCarthy is the backup. Adam Schefter reported it Tuesday. Everyone is calling McCarthy a bust. That is the easy read, and it misses the part that actually matters for Minnesota. Murray is on a one-year deal. Carson Wentz is on a one-year deal. Past 2026, the only two quarterbacks the Vikings control are McCarthy and undrafted second-year passer Max Brosmer. McCarthy's rookie contract runs through 2027, which means Minnesota has to make a fifth-year option decision on him in early May 2027 using evidence from a season he is going to spend holding a clipboard. Then there is the roster math. Every NFL team has to be at 53 players by 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 30. The Vikings are carrying four quarterbacks. Almost nobody keeps four, and cutting Brosmer would put him on waivers where another team can claim him. So the real question is not whether McCarthy falls behind Carson Wentz on the depth chart. It is whether he is on the roster at all on August 31. McCarthy 2025: 10 games, 57.6% completions, 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions. PFF charted him 42nd of 43 qualified passers in accuracy. He missed seven games with an ankle sprain, a concussion and a hand fracture, after losing his 2024 rookie season to a torn meniscus.
