Magdalena Bay expanded their kaleidoscopic synth-pop universe with ‘Imaginal Disk,’ the Los Angeles duo’s second studio album. Released through Mom+Pop, the 15-track project was self-produced by Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin and mixed by Dave Fridmann. Drawing from psychedelic pop, electronic music, funk, and ‘90s-inspired textures, the record feels deliberately maximalist while maintaining the duo’s knack for instantly memorable melodies. 

At the heart of the album is a surreal science-fiction narrative in which Tenenbaum’s character, True, undergoes a strange transformation involving an extraterrestrial disk and must rediscover what it means to be human. Songs including ‘Death & Romance,’ ‘Image,’ ‘That’s My Floor,’ and ‘Tunnel Vision’ build out that world through shifting genres and increasingly elaborate production, while ‘The Ballad of Matt & Mica’ closes the story by bringing the duo themselves into its fantastical framework. 

Critics embraced ‘Imaginal Disk’ as a major creative leap, with its Metacritic score reaching 85 and reviews praising its ambitious world-building and adventurous production. The album also became a growing commercial success, eventually reaching the UK Independent Albums chart and gaining a wider audience through Magdalena Bay’s subsequent touring. In retrospect, it stands as a defining statement from a duo whose eccentric pop instincts became increasingly difficult to categorize.
