They call Porto Portugal’s second city. Accurate on population but perhaps a little misleading on vibe.

One of our guides told us an old local saying: #porto works while Lisbon plays. Port wine takes its name from here. And unlike Lisbon, Porto was spared the 1755 earthquake, which is why it feels older, denser, and less tidied up. It’s a little more intimate and moody to me.

From the water the city stacks straight up and the layers refuse to stay in their lanes. A half-finished flyover hanging in mid-air above a derelict industrial block. A medieval wall with a funicular running up its side. Three centuries on one hillside, all of it still in use.

Our Portugal trip started here. We landed and went straight onto the water, with a private boat down the Douro before we’d unpacked. Then the historical center on foot, the Sé, a tuk-tuk up hills no rental car should attempt. I filled up an entire SD card in two days.

For anyone who travels to be inspired rather than to check a box, Porto is a place to go slowly. A place where history continues to go about its everyday life.
