Every fall, millions of salmon across British Columbia embark on a remarkable journey: they make their way from the ocean back to the exact freshwater stream where they hatched.

These salmon act as a food source for bears, wolves, and bald eagles, to name a few. They also sustain First Nations communities along BC’s coast and rivers, as they have done for thousands of years. The salmon run is a major tourism draw for the province, offering opportunities for salmon viewing, bear sightseeing, and recreational fishing. 

However, wild salmon are facing major threats. Open-net pens sit directly in migration routes, spreading sea lice and diseases like piscine orthoreovirus to the wild fish swimming past. BC is now the last place on the Pacific coast of North America that still allows it. In 2024, Canada announced a commitment to phase out open-net pen fisheries by June 2029. Here we are, now under 3 years away from the deadline, and no detailed plan has been finalized. Every year we delay action is another year that wild salmon, and everything that depends on them, are put at risk.
