Anthony Colandrea will be Nebraska’s starting quarterback when the Huskers open the 2026 season. Head coach Matt Rhule made the designation Saturday following Nebraska’s second fall scrimmage, saying Colandrea would be the starter if the team played today. “Anthony would play for us right now as the starter,” Rhule said. Nebraska closed training camp Saturday with a roughly 110-play scrimmage and will begin its transition toward the season as classes start Monday. The Huskers begin Ohio preparation Thursday, Aug. 27, ahead of their opener nine days later. Rhule praised Colandrea’s competitive edge and command of the offense, specifically pointing to his decision-making in both the run and pass game. “He’s very competitive, fiery. He expects to win every play,” Rhule said. “He’s disciplined. He takes what’s there. He makes nice checks in the run-pass game. He extends plays.” That ability to create outside the original structure of a play can help Nebraska in multiple ways, Rhule said. It allows the quarterback to relieve pressure on the offensive line while forcing defenses to account for an additional threat. Colandrea arrives in Lincoln after a productive career at Virginia, where he threw for 3,459 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2025 while adding 649 rushing yards and 10 scores. He was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year last season at UNLV and enters his first year with the Huskers with 7,542 career passing yards and 49 passing touchdowns. While the starting job is set, the competition behind him remains open. Rhule said Danny Kaelin and TJ Lateef are still competing for Nebraska’s No. 2 quarterback role. Both quarterbacks have received significant work throughout camp as the Huskers continue to build depth before the opener. Nebraska will use next Saturday’s mock game to rehearse game-day operations before fully turning its attention to Ohio. #Huskers #NebraskaFootball #GBR #NebraskaCornhuskers #BigTenFootball
