This week's post in #EORCA's #BlackHistoryMonth series honoring Jazz focuses on some of the most prominent female artists of the genre.

Our primary spotlight shines on SARAH VAUGHAN, another Jazz legend with roots in Essex County! 

🎤 Born in Newark and raised in a home filled with music, Sarah Vaughan grew from church performances at Mt. Zion Baptist Church to becoming one of jazz’s most breathtaking vocal innovators.
🌟 Her 1942 Apollo Theater win launched a career defined by fearless musicality, unmatched range, and a tone so rich it earned her the nickname “The Divine One.”
🎶 Vaughan’s mastery spanned bebop, ballads, and orchestral works — collaborating with legends and shaping the sound of modern jazz with every phrase.
🖤 Sarah Vaughan’s legacy lives on as a symbol of artistic brilliance, vocal power, and the boundless creativity of Black women who transformed American music.

💫 Her influence stands alongside fellow trailblazing Black women in jazz like BILLIE HOLIDAY, ELLA FITZGERALD, DINAH WASHINGTON, ABBEY LINCOLN, MARY LOU WILLIAMS, and NINA SIMONE.
