When Land Rover showed the world what the Discovery was capable of… by pulling a 100-ton train. 😳🚙🚂

A family SUV pulling a train sounds like something that shouldn't be possible.

But Land Rover decided to turn that idea into a demonstration of the Discovery's towing capability.

The challenge was simple:

Could a Land Rover Discovery actually move a massive railway carriage?

The answer was yes.

In a famous demonstration, a Discovery was used to pull a train weighing around 100 tonnes — an absurd amount of weight compared with what you'd normally expect from an SUV.

Think about the physics.

A normal car is designed to accelerate its own weight and carry a few passengers.

A train weighing 100 tonnes is an entirely different problem.

The Discovery had to generate enough pulling force to overcome the train's resistance and get that enormous mass moving.

And getting something that heavy moving from a standstill is often the hardest part.

This wasn't about making the SUV look fast.

It was about demonstrating torque, traction, drivetrain strength and towing capability.

The vehicle's four-wheel-drive system helped distribute power to the wheels, while the drivetrain and chassis had to cope with enormous loads.

And there's another important factor:

Traction.

Having a powerful engine doesn't mean much if the tires can't transfer that power to the ground.

The vehicle needs enough grip to generate the force required to move the load without simply spinning its wheels.

That's what makes demonstrations like this so fascinating.

You're looking at a relatively compact SUV…

…and behind it is something weighing roughly 100,000 kilograms. 🤯

Land Rover wasn't trying to suggest that people should start using their Discovery to pull trains every weekend.

It was a statement.
