“The rainfall this year in the Okavango Delta was above average and so was the flood recorded in detail by our network of hydrological and meteorological monitoring stations spread across the river basin. Next year is going to be difficult with a much lower flood expected while we will be poling across the Delta at the same time."

Every year the team travels along two established routes along the Delta combining scientific and traditional knowledge as the primary mechanisms for ecosystem monitoring, management and protection. "Most important is our local team members who lead these expeditions, as well as National Geographic Explorers from the region, who take what they observe and learn back into local communities. Their stories and observations drive knowledge systems back home that can protect the Okavango Delta for generations to come.”

The National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project has been surveying and collecting scientific data on the river system and working with local communities; NGOs; and the governments of Angola, Namibia and Botswana to secure permanent, sustainable protection for the greater Okavango Basin. It is part-funded through #OkavangoEternal, a 10-year partnership between debeersgroup and the National Geographic Society, which helps accelerate this work.
