Dogs have a surprisingly interesting place in the history of modern AI.

When ImageNet became one of the major testing grounds for computer vision, dog breeds presented a particularly difficult challenge. Recognising a dog was one thing. Distinguishing between many visually similar breeds was much harder.

Then came AlexNet in 2012. Its performance on ImageNet helped demonstrate just how powerful deep neural networks running on GPUs could be and became one of the defining moments in modern computer vision.

Dogs kept appearing in the story.

At NVIDIA's 2014 GTC keynote, people in the audience were asked to post photos of their dogs on Twitter. The images were picked up in real time and an ImageNet classifier tried to identify their breeds.
Given Jensen Huang's well-documented soft spot for dogs, perhaps it's fitting that they found their way into this part of NVIDIA's story too.

It’s interesting how quickly the challenge has evolved.

We went from teaching computers to tell a Siberian Husky apart from an Alaskan Malamute to exploring how AI can help us understand behaviour, health, activity and individual dogs much more broadly. Breed classification helped push computer vision forward. Now the technology has developed far beyond image classification, and we're finding new ways to make it useful for dogs.

Quite a journey in little more than a decade.
