This #MuseumMonday, we would like to highlight artist Anders Zorn. He passed 106 years ago, on August 22nd, 1920, leaving behind an empowering cultural legacy. Anders Zorn was a Swedish artist who achieved international recognition as a painter, sculptor, and etcher. His portrait subjects extend to world leaders, such as three American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William H. Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. He also depicted King Oscar II of Sweden.

Anders Zorn and Charles Deering met at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where Deering became one of Zorn’s key American supporters. Their meeting began a long-term professional and personal connection. Deering served as both patron and friend, even posing for a number of Zorn's artworks, as shown above. These include “Reading (La Lecture)” (1893): an etching showing Deering with a bandaged eye listening to his wife read; “The Travel Companion” (1904): an etching depicting Deering while traveling; and “Portrait of Charles Deering,”: a portrait of Deering.

Today, the Art Institute of Chicago holds a substantial collection of Zorn’s etchings and works that were originally part of Deering’s personal collection. In 1927, upon the passing of Charles Deering, the Deering family donated a significant portion of their collection to the museum, ensuring Zorn's work is preserved and becomes accessible to future audiences.

To learn more about the about Charles Deering's collection, visit the Historic Richmond Cottage the Deering Estate, open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM.

We are proud to be a Blue Star Museum. Active military personnel and their families can visit Deering Estate for free through September 7 (Labor Day). We appreciate your service and look forward to hosting you.
