Nearly half a century before the Civil Rights Movement, Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington were fighting inequality through education.

The son of a Jewish immigrant who arrived in America with just $20, Rosenwald rose to extraordinary success, but never forgot the value his parents taught him: tzedakah.

Often translated as “charity,” tzedakah actually comes from the Hebrew word for justice.

So when Black children in the Jim Crow South were denied a proper education, Rosenwald felt an obligation - not to provide charity, but to pursue justice.

Partnering with Washington, Rosenwald helped establish over 5,000 schools and institutions that would educate generations of Black Americans to come.

Not charity. Justice. Tzedakah in action.
