Artificial intelligence offers huge potential to help tackle global crises, including the climate emergency, but its rapid growth also carries significant environmental costs.

AI data centres use vaste amounts of electricity and water, generate electronic waste, and rely on critical minerals.

“AI must be used to help solve the climate crisis — not deepen it,” #UnitedNations Secretary-General antonioguterres has said.

“AI companies must power data centres with renewable energy by 2030 and disclose their environmental footprint. Technology aimed at protecting people must also protect the planet.”
