Introducing Let’s Unpack - A new series where we’re deep diving into the travel tips, insider knowledge and little things that can make a big difference from someone who travels for a living.
And for the first one, let’s unpack something every London visitor needs to know: taking the Tube.

If you’re visiting London for the first time, the Underground can look a little intimidating, but I promise it’s one of the easiest, fastest and most London ways to get around the city.

A few things I always tell people before their first journey:

🚇 Download Citymapper. It’ll tell you which line to take, where to stand on the platform and, importantly, which stations actually have lifts.

🚇 You don’t need an Oyster card anymore. Contactless or Apple Pay works perfectly. Just remember to tap in AND tap out using the same card or device.

🚇 Stand on the right, walk on the left on escalators. This one is non-negotiable in London 😂

🚇 Let people off the train before you get on.

🚇 Move down inside the carriage when it’s busy rather than hovering by the doors.

🚇 Check your route if you’re staying out late. Not every line runs through the night.

🚇 And yes, some Tube lines are considerably nicer than others. District line with its wider carriages and air con? Superior. Piccadilly line on a hot summer day? Character building.

Most importantly, don’t be scared of it. I’ve lived in London for six years and the Tube is still how I get around the city most days. Once you’ve taken it a couple of times, it becomes second nature.
