After falling behind to an early Leroy Sané goal, Ecuador responded to equalize just minutes later before Gonzalo Plata scored the 77th-minute winner.

For Germany, already through to the knockout stage, it was a costly-looking final group match. Julian Nagelsmann’s side lacked sharpness in attack, missed key pieces defensively, and Manuel Neuer — a surprise starter given the circumstances — was unable to prevent Ecuador’s winner as Germany closed group play with its first defeat of the tournament.
