Despite strong play from Erreala to start, Union Berlin held off the visitors and got on the board with a 42nd minute goal by Robin Gosens. Die Eisern held Real Sociedad off until the 82nd minute when a slew of subs for both teams brought fresh legs and a bit more aggression late. Mikel Oyarzabal got the equalizer for the La Liga side, sending the teams away with a 1-1 draw.

Union opens DFB-Pokal play at Greifswalder FC next Saturday and open the Bundesliga season on the road at Mainz on August 24.
