On October 26 2025, a group of Samoan crew members aboard the cruise ship MSC Splendida rescued 19 migrants in distress off the coast of Mallorca, Spain.

According to the ship's tracking data, the intervention took place approximately 20 nautical miles from Cabrera, in the Balearic Islands, not far from the southern coast of Mallorca.

The ship, with 3,900 passengers on board, responded to a distress call and, upon arrival at the scene, found the migrants on an overcrowded vessel in rough seas; some of them had already fallen into the water and were struggling to stay afloat. The crew lowered a ladder to allow the shipwrecked people to climb aboard, and fortunately, all 19 refugees, who were from the Maghreb region of North Africa, were saved and assisted by the MSC staff.

Among them were a woman and two young children, a three-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy. The entire rescue operation lasted a remarkable 31 minutes given the difficult sea conditions.

The incident occurred on the final day of a four-night Mediterranean cruise with stops in Marseille and Genoa; the Fantasia-class ship was returning to Barcelona for the scheduled disembarkation on October 27, 2025. All port calls had already been completed, and the incident did not cause any delay to the following day's disembarkation.

Although crew members are trained for emergency situations at sea, their ability to remain calm, act decisively, and move efficiently was widely praised.

The Samoa Shipping Services (SSS), the recruitment agency for the sailors involved, issued an official acknowledgment to the Samoan employees who led the rescue operations: Willie Roy, Sanele Tuilagi, Apineru Urima, Eikomene Tagaloa, Eferona Matafeo, John Mark Tauiliili, Pale Tafaeono, Toe Junior Togatuki, Faamotu Puleitu, Faafili Tauailoto, Patelesio Ioane Tafunai, Avau Pulepule, Sosiua Junior Folasa, and Matureo Lualua Tautu. In a statement released on social media, the SSS declared that they are “immensely proud to support and recognize our Samoan seafarers recruited to MSC, who consistently demonstrate exceptional skill and dedication at sea.”
