“Sport doesn’t need safer or blander advertising. It needs people making and approving work who understand the difference between provocation with a purpose and an idea that should never have left the room.”

The now-deleted Callaway x Good Good Golf ad falls firmly into the latter. A man knocking a woman to the ground over a golf club and standing over her threateningly isn’t edgy or provocative. The imagery evokes domestic abuse, and we unequivocally condemn it.

But how does something like that get conceived, produced, approved and published?

We went deeper. Into Sky Sports Halo and what happens when wanting a female audience becomes a substitute for understanding one. Into the outrage surrounding Nike’s Team USA kit, where context changed the story considerably. And into Women’s Aid’s brilliant “HE’S COMING HOME”, which proves that making an audience uncomfortable can sometimes be exactly the point.

This isn’t about making creative safer. It’s about judgement, context, who is in the room and knowing the difference between controversy worth creating and something that simply should never have made it out.
