What we call "wealthiest countries" depends on how wealth is measured.

Average wealth is the total wealth of a country divided by its adult population. It provides a picture of how much wealth exists overall, but it can be significantly influenced by a small number of ultra-wealthy individuals.

Median wealth, on the other hand, represents the point where 50% of adults have more wealth and 50% have less. Because it's less affected by extreme wealth, it's often considered a better reflection of what a "typical" person owns.

But both metrics matter: Average wealth tells us how much wealth has been created; Median wealth tells us how widely that wealth is shared.

Take the United States as an example: It ranks #2 globally in average wealth, yet only #28 in median wealth. This suggests that while the country holds a significant amount of personal wealth overall, it is not distributed evenly, with some very wealthy individuals lifting the average.

Meanwhile, Luxembourg ranks #1 in median wealth, indicating that high levels of wealth are more broadly reflected across the population.

The takeaway? Looking at average wealth alone doesn't tell the whole story. By combining average and median wealth, we get a more balanced understanding of prosperity, wealth creation and wealth distribution.
