Tonight’s Katrina: The Next 20 Years panel presented by the Gulf States Newsroom was phenomenal.

Twenty-one years after Hurricane Katrina, the conversation cannot only be about what happened. It also has to be about what we learned, what we changed, what we failed to change, and what we are doing to prepare for the next 20 years.

The discussion brought together voices from journalism, coastal restoration, environmental advocacy, community organizing, government and history to talk about resilience, infrastructure, coastal loss and the future of New Orleans and South Louisiana.

And I have to give a special shoutout to my alma mater, St. Mary’s Academy! 💙💛💙

During the discussion, Sr. Alicia spoke of the Sisters of the Holy Family solar farm and work around renewable energy and resilience. As an alumna, hearing my high school mentioned in a conversation about what the future of New Orleans can look like was a proud moment.

Jessica Dandridge-Smith of The Water Collaborative was phenomenal. One of the things that really resonated with me was her emphasis on community and collaboration, that building a stronger, more resilient New Orleans cannot happen in silos.

Government, residents, nonprofits, businesses, advocates and neighborhood leaders all have a role to play. Protecting our communities and preparing for the future requires us to work with one another, not around one another.

Katrina changed this city forever. But remembering Katrina also means asking hard questions about what comes next, particularly for the communities that have historically carried the greatest risk.

Phenomenal conversation tonight. I’m glad I was in the room.
