7 Cheap Sources of Fiber

I’ve said it for years, and the Washington Post just made the case again: eating well doesn’t have to cost more. Fiber is cheap, powerful, and badly underconsumed. Up to 95% of us fall short, even though it helps digestion, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

Here are 7 of my favorite inexpensive sources, ranked by cost per gram of fiber 👇

🍿 Popcorn: about 2¢/g. A whole grain. Go easy on the butter and salt.
🫘 Dried lentils: about 3¢/g. Shelf stable and easy to digest.
🥣 Chia seeds: about 4¢/g. Eat them with plenty of liquid.
🌾 Oat bran: about 5¢/g. More fiber than instant oats.
🥫 Canned beans: up to 16g of fiber per cup.
🍠 Sweet potatoes: about 8¢/g. Keep the skin on.
🍎 Apples: about 5g each. Easy to grab and go.

Aim for roughly 10g of fiber a meal, and build up slowly with plenty of water so your gut can adjust.

My favorite of all is beans. They’re the cornerstone of every blue zone diet I’ve studied: cheap, shelf stable, and loaded with fiber and protein. Living a long life doesn’t take powders or superfoods, just simple staples.

Save this for your next grocery run. 🛒
