At around 44 years of age, Annie the short-beaked echidna continues to capture the hearts of staff, volunteers, members and guests here at your Toronto Zoo, and we’re incredibly proud to be celebrating this special ambassador 🦔

Annie recently had a routine check-up at the Wildlife Health and Science Centre toward the end of July, and we’re happy to share that she’s in good health!

Her team also took the time to check her foot, which continues to look great following surgery in 2024. Through regular health assessments, daily observations and trusting relationships built with her team, we can continue providing Annie with exceptional care as she ages.

Annie is particularly special because her presence at your Toronto Zoo makes her the only short-beaked echidna in Canada, giving Zoo members and guests a unique opportunity to connect with one of the world’s most fascinating mammals.

Did you know? Native to Australia and New Guinea, short-beaked echidnas are monotremes - meaning, an extraordinary group of egg-laying mammals which includes echidnas and the platypus. Equipped with powerful claws for digging and a long, specialized tongue for finding ants and termites, they are unlike almost any other mammal on Earth.

At 44 years young, Annie is a wonderful example of why lifelong care matters. Every routine check-up, observation and interaction with her team helps us better understand and support her individual needs throughout every stage of her life 🤎
