Her lungs were full of rabbit fur.

South London, 1889. She scraped down off rabbit skins with a blunt knife, twelve hours a day, her daughter working beside her. The windows stayed shut even in August, because a draught sent the fur flying. She said she was always “more or less choked.”

In 1896 the government recommended work like this be exempted from safety law entirely.
