We’re kicking off a new weekly series: Behind the Rescue 🐾

Every Tuesday, we’ll give you a glimpse of the work that happens behind the scenes at North Meck Animal Rescue-- the messy, unexpected, and often challenging parts of rescue that don’t always make it into the adoption photos.

And we couldn’t think of a better story to start with.

Sometimes rescue looks like adoption events, happy families, and cute puppy pictures.

And sometimes it looks like crawling through a storm drain and disappearing into the bushes after a litter of tiny kittens. 😬

When our rockstar volunteer Ashlyn abg2847 heard that a semi-feral mama cat had hidden her babies in a storm drain, she jumped into action. Getting to them meant climbing into places most of us would rather not, getting dirty, and coming away with more than a few scratches and bruises-- but Ashlyn was determined to give this little family a chance.

That willingness to jump in wherever she’s needed is something Ashlyn has brought to NMAR again and again, and we’re incredibly grateful to have her on our team. Rescue isn't always glamorous, and sometimes helping animals means doing the uncomfortable, dirty work that nobody sees.

This rescue isn’t over yet. Mama is one smart, cautious cat, and we’re working on a plan to safely get everyone safe and loved. For now, she and her babies are together, and we’ll be back with an update as their story continues.
