I will NEVER weigh myself again after what these tests showed me.

I’ve been wanting to share more about my experience at DEXAFIT NYC dexafitny and Prefusion Health prefusionhealth for a while now, doing The Prefusion Protocol.

I did my first full-body DEXA scan at 5 months postpartum. My weight was up, and my body fat was higher, which wasn’t exactly surprising after having my second baby.

My goal from here is to build about 2 more pounds of lean muscle while working toward losing around 8 pounds of body fat. My visceral fat (fat around the organs) was practically nonexistent, which I am super proud of and want to maintain.

Then we got into my bloodwork, and this is where I learned something I wasn’t expecting.

My SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) was high, which meant my free testosterone was lower than what would be ideal for the amount of athletic training I do. One of the things that can make building and maintaining lean muscle harder is not giving your body enough fuel.

You cannot out-train underfueling.

My personalized nutrition recommendation came out to 140g protein per day, with a 250-calorie deficit in order to build muscle while losing fat.

Then came my VO₂ max test, and this was probably my favorite part. My score came back in the superior range, but what I found most interesting was seeing exactly how my body uses fuel at different intensities.

At lower exertion, I was able to rely more heavily on fat for fuel. As intensity increased, my body needed more carbohydrates to meet the demand.(Translation: If I’m going to ask my body to go HARD, I need to actually give it the fuel to do that. Otherwise… I’m going to hit a wall 😂)

This whole process was such a good reminder that fitness isn’t just about what you see in the mirror.

It’s muscle. It’s cardiovascular fitness. It’s bone health. It’s hormones. It’s nutrition. It’s recovery. And especially postpartum, it’s understanding that your body is not a machine you can just force back to where it was. My goal is to get to a place that is even better than my pre-pregnancy self.
