Over the years a lot of women have asked me the same question about their tattoo sessions: is this normal?

Not about the tattoo. About something that happened in the chair that they weren't okay with, and weren't sure they were allowed to not be okay with. They asked me because there was nowhere else to ask.

So I built Inkling. Here is how it works.

You make a profile of what you want and need in an artist. Every preference is set to Any, Prefer, or Must. Anything marked Must hard filters your deck: you are never shown an artist who doesn't meet it. Prefer ranks the rest. So you only browse artists who clear every Must, and swipe.

An artist never gets a directory of clients. They only see the people who already swiped yes on them, then choose whether to take the work. If they like back, it's a match and you can talk. It's like we turned Tinder into finding your tattoo artist.

Before you swipe you read what previous clients said about the session itself, not just the art. Same questions every time: did you feel safe and respected, were your boundaries honoured, was the studio clean, would you book again.

Every review is tied to a real appointment: a deposit, a session date, and a photo of the finished tattoo. No review without all three, so it's hard to fake either way.

Women's, men's and enby’s answers are reported separately, never blended. One score lets an artist who's fine with men and not fine with women look fine. Side by side, a gap shows.

Artists pay a fee to be listed, and a portion of it goes into a fund for laser removal or a cover-up after a session that went badly. It is money set aside, not money owed. Nobody applies for it, and asking about it can never change a review you left.

If you tattoo, none of this is a threat to a good artist. If you run a good chair, that has never been written down anywhere you own. Being listed means a human reads your certificates and policies.

It is not a vetting authority. It can't promise how anyone will behave. It's information to decide with, and I'd rather say that than oversell it.
