Tennis coaches are often more comfortable correcting difference than understanding what that difference allows.

Teodor “Teo” Davidov switches the racket between his hands and plays a forehand from both sides.

It is unusual.

It does not match the traditional technical model.

But neither of those facts establishes that it is dysfunctional.

Davidov’s two forehands are not evidence that every player should be taught this way. His solution may offer advantages while also creating challenges when switching hands under severe time pressure.

We also cannot yet know how successfully it will function at the highest level of senior tennis.

That is not the point.

The point is that his game expands our understanding of what a viable tennis solution can look like.

Skilled movement develops through the interaction between the player, their intentions, the task and the environment. Different capabilities and development histories can produce very different solutions to the same performance problem.

Before changing an unconventional technique, investigate it:

Can it adapt to different balls and situations?

Does it remain effective under pressure?

Does it create an advantage or a recurring limitation?

Is the player experiencing pain or discomfort?

What evidence suggests that intervention would improve rather than disrupt it?

“Unusual” is not a diagnosis.

Normal describes what is common. It does not determine what is functional, optimal or possible.

Davidov is not a technical model for everyone to copy.

He is another remarkable example of just how adaptable and skilful human beings can become.

Don’t correct difference simply because it makes you uncomfortable.
