Lanii Tu’guul is the grandest Zapotec Celebration of the dead for the indigenous communities east of Oaxaca City. The common translation: “Day of the Dead” does not capture the depth and joy of Lanii Tu’guul, which is why we warmly invite you to learn and experience it firsthand.

My family and I are eternally grateful to tastesalud for visiting responsibly, in reciprocity encapsulating the true meaning of our indigenous cosmovision, led by my abuelita last year.

In our language, Lanii means celebration, and Tu’guul are our loved ones who are no longer with us but return home on November 1st.

Celebrations vary by community and together, we will learn from community members and honor the unique traditions of each place we visit.

A brief orientation about our experiences:

No Catrina face painting: In communities outside Oaxaca City, we honor local traditions rather than adopting Mexico City adaptations popularized through tourism and film.

Reciprocity: We pay host families holiday rates to recognize their generosity in welcoming us into their homes during this sacred time.

No commissions: Guests purchase directly from local families, and we never take a commission from their sales, The traditional tourism sector takes up to 50% from families’ sales.

Etiquette: Before each visit, we provide a brief etiquette orientation to help guests understand how to respectfully enter and participate in the community.
