#TSRUpdatez: The Fort Worth City Council has unanimously approved an $11.25 million settlement for the family of #AtatianaJefferson, nearly seven years after the 28-year-old was fatally shot by a police officer inside her Texas home.

The settlement stems from a 2021 wrongful death lawsuit filed against the city and police. Portions of the money will be placed in trusts for Jefferson’s two minor nephews, with additional funds going to other surviving family members. The agreement still needs final approval from probate court.

Jefferson was shot in October 2019 after former Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean responded to a nonemergency welfare check at her home. Dean did not announce himself as an officer before shooting Jefferson through a window as she approached with a gun, believing someone outside could be a burglar. Her 8-year-old nephew was inside the home at the time.

Dean resigned shortly afterward and was convicted of manslaughter in 2022. He was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
