#TSRLocalLens: Ohio principal #RobBurnside lost his job after stepping in to help a student who was experiencing homelessness.

While serving as principal of Lakota East High School near Cincinnati, Burnside learned that student #LanderiusHayes, who goes by DeDe, could no longer attend the school because he didn’t have a parent living within the district.

After Burnside told his wife, Angel, about the situation, she suggested Hayes live with them. With his mother’s permission, the couple welcomed the teen into their home. Burnside then allowed Hayes to continue attending the school despite the district saying he was no longer eligible.

Burnside says he was later given the choice to resign or face termination. Even when Hayes offered to leave so Burnside could keep his job, Burnside refused, telling him, “You’re part of this family. We’re not gonna turn our back on you.” The Burnsides eventually became Hayes’ legal guardians, allowing him to return to school. Hayes graduated from a different high school in May with Rob and Angel, whom he now calls “Pops” and “Ma,” cheering him on.
