On this day in 2023, Terry Funk died at the age of 79.

Funk debuted in 1965 for Western States Sports, the Amarillo, Texas promotion run by his father Dory Funk. 

He beat Jack Brisco for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on December 10, 1975 in Miami Beach, Florida, and held it for more than 420 days before losing to Harley Race in Toronto. He and his brother Dory Funk Jr. remain the only brothers to have held the championship.

Funk headlined against Dusty Rhodes and Jerry Lawler in the territory era, worked as a heel tag team with his brother in Japan, and had a career-defining 1989 program with Ric Flair in WCW that included piledriving Flair onto a ringside table. He then found another run in ECW, where he was a two-time World Heavyweight Champion, and later won the WWF Tag Team Titles as Chainsaw Charlie with Mick Foley. He also appeared in movies such as Road House, Over the Top and Paradise Alley.

Funk entered the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 alongside Dory Jr. and is also in the WCW, NWA, Hardcore, Professional Wrestling and Wrestling Observer Halls of Fame.
