Virginia Tech’s iconic “Enter Sandman” entrance, widely regarded as one of the most electric traditions in college football, began in 2000 when the Hokies installed a new videoboard at Lane Stadium and selected Metallica’s heavy-metal anthem over alternatives like Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.” 

The song debuted on August 27 against Georgia Tech (a game later canceled by lightning), but the full spectacle evolved in 2001 when Marching Virginians members spontaneously jumped to stay warm on a chilly night, sparking a stadium-wide bounce that has since registered on seismographs during big games. 

As the Hokies charge out of the tunnel amid fireworks and the crowd’s thunderous jumping and chanting, the entrance creates an intimidating, high-energy atmosphere that defines Hokie Nation and continues to electrify Lane Stadium more than 25 years later.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
