Is HIV an STI?

The simple answer is yes but it’s more complicated than that.

You may hear STD and STI used interchangeably, but STI is the more precise term because someone can have an infection without showing signs of disease.

But the label only tells part of the story. HIV can also be transmitted through sharing injection equipment, and during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

Regardless of how someone acquired HIV, they do not deserve shame. HIV is a medical condition, not a reflection of someone’s character.

And with effective treatment, people with HIV can live long, healthy lives. Someone who achieves and maintains an undetectable viral load does not transmit HIV through intimate activities. That is U equals U.
