After every Oregon football victory, the words bounce off the walls as fans linger in Autzen Stadium:

"Eugene, Oregon, I’ll remember you for the rest of my life"

In February 1972, a 26-year-old Parton was touring with Porter Wagoner and The Wagonmasters. She found herself at the Lane County Fairgrounds in Eugene, still recovering from an illness that sidelined her on previous legs of the tour. She asked the crowd of roughly 1,500 for their patience.

Instead, fans showered her with love. Parton received her first-ever standing ovation mid-set, and the moment moved the budding superstar to tears. She wrote the song, “Eugene, Oregon” on the tour bus that night.
