Some of Apou Aderbuk's friends and family don't quite understand why the 28-year-old is pursuing the life she chose.

The South Sudanese woman left her home and family, including her four children, to come to the United States and pursue her American dream of becoming an aviation missionary. She hopes to earn her pilot's license along with being a pastor in order to travel across the globe to preach her Lutheran faith.

Aderbuk arrived in 2020 and believed her children would be able to join her in a year. She is still waiting to be reunited with her three boys and one girl, who are staying in Uganda with family.

Aderbuk, an interning vicar at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, is one of thousands of foreign-born clergy who have immigrated to the United States. As with other immigrant groups, religious workers face uncertainty, long waits and difficult transitions.
