You’re sitting there in class nodding along. It all makes sense.

Two weeks later someone asks you about that exact topic and your brain is completely blank.

Every topic you learn should pass through 3 steps. Skip one and it won’t stick 👇

1️⃣ UNDERSTAND
→ Confusion you ignore in week 1 becomes a crisis by week 10.
→ Ask the second something doesn’t click. Your teacher clears in 2 mins what costs you 2 hours alone.
→ Using AI? Say “explain this, then quiz me.” Then fact check it.
→ Never let it just hand you the answer.
✅ Rule: you can’t remember what you never understood.

2️⃣ REMEMBER
→ Same day or next day, close your notes.
→ Produce it from memory: rewrite it, say it out loud, draw it, teach it.
→ This is the only step that shows what you can recall without help.
→ Struggling here isn’t failure. It’s you finding the gap early, while it’s still small.
✅ Rule: the struggle to recall IS the memory strengthening (Roediger & Karpicke).

3️⃣ APPLY
→ Start a “MISTAKES DOCUMENT” on day one of the new academic year.
→ Log every question you get wrong, guess or can’t explain.
→ Next to each, write WHY you got it wrong. The why is the whole point.
→ Revisit until you can solve it with zero help.
✅ Rule: by the final exam time this document is worth more than every note you took.

👉 THE MISTAKE 90% MAKE
They stop after Step 1.
It made sense in class, so they assume it’s learned and they never test whether they could produce it.
Then exams come and nothing is there.

Start this in week one and you never spend a year catching up.
