Someone dropped a Hawkeye listing in the group chat last week — $38k, stock, two owners, and nobody even flinched at the number. Three tabs over, a clean 2011 GVB hatch with the wide fenders was sitting at less than half that. Same EJ257. Same six-speed. Same DCCD splitting torque out back. The only difference is which one the internet decided to canonize.

The GC8 earned the myth honestly — EJ20, homologation, a rally program that made the badge mean something before most of us had licenses. But it's a 5x100 car from another era and half the good ones are already museum pieces. You buy that one with your heart and a garage spot, not a commute.

Hawkeye is the peak and I'll defend it: the 06-07 refresh cleaned up the face, gave you 300hp from the 2.5, gold 17x8 +53 BBS, Brembos on 5x114.3, and the last version of the sedan shape people actually recognize from posters. Deserved. Also priced like everyone knows it.

Which is exactly why the hatch is the buy. The 2008-14 GR/GV got called soft by people who never drove one, then 2011 handed it wide fenders and a hatch you can actually load, and the market still hasn't corrected. VA closed it out with 305hp, bigger brakes, 18x8.5 +55 on 245/40, and the sharpest chassis of the bunch — but it's newer money.

Wheel-wise, ignore the factory offset if you're doing anything. GR/GV and VA fitment lives around 18x9.5 +38 to +40 on 255/35 with modest camber, 5x114.3, 56.1 bore. That's the number that makes the car look built instead of leased.

One warning across all of them: the EJ257 does not forgive a cheap tune. Budget for the tuner before the turbo.

Save this before you buy the wrong setup.
