Watched a clean white GR86 roll into a meet last summer sitting on coilovers, maybe an inch and a half down, and something still looked off. Owner knew it too. Kept walking around the car like the answer was going to show up if he circled enough times. Somebody finally said it out loud: it's not the ride height, dude, your wheels are parked in the middle of the fender.

That's the ZN8/ZD8 in a sentence. Toyota and Subaru shipped it at 17x7.5 or 18x7.5 at +48 on a 215 tire, 5x100, 56.1 bore. That offset isn't laziness, it's a global-market spec built to clear a strut, survive a curb, and pass in every country they sell it in. But +48 pulls the whole face inboard, so the fender arch ends up an inch away from anything. You can drop the car all day and you're just moving a narrow wheel closer to the ground.

The fix is width and a lower offset, square, not staggered. This car turns on rotating tires and a Torsen out back — staggering it is copying a chassis it isn't.

The recipe that works on a street car:
18x9.5 +38 square, 5x100, 56.1 hub bore (or a 56.1 ring, do not run hub-centric-by-lug-nut and pretend it's fine)
255/35R18 all four corners
~1.25 to 1.5 in of drop, no more, this thing needs its suspension travel
Mild front fender roll if you're aggressive on entry, most people never touch them

What it actually costs you: a 255 square setup is more rubber money up front than the factory 215s, but you rotate all four, you're not buying two different sizes, and the FA24 is not going to shred them. You also gain grip the car was always geometrically capable of using.

The part nobody says out loud: half the GR86s people call "perfect stance" are running less drop than yours and more width. Width reads as low. Low without width just reads as low.

Pick a lane and commit — tucked and daily-able, or filled and flush. The half-measure is the only wrong answer.
