Emily Perez started an Instagram page for Latinas in beauty. It is now a nonprofit with a board, a Pepperdine accelerator, and corporate partners.

She went looking for an organization like that in 2020 and could not find one. So she built it herself, for four years, alongside a full-time corporate job. Margarita Arriagada and Nadine Tapia came on as founding board members when it became a nonprofit.

On The PIMS Influence, Emily walks Mike through how she measures whether the work is landing, what the Beauty Bravura Accelerator teaches founders about entering retail and staying there, the regulatory mistake that costs indie brands later, and where she draws the line on AI.

She was going to be a veterinarian. Summers interning at veterinary hospitals changed that, and her first job out of Rutgers used her fluent Portuguese to handle product registrations across Latin America. Beauty came after that. She describes the first five to eight years in corporate as the time it took to learn to show up as herself and take up space, and says the reason she started mentoring other Latinas was that she had navigated it without a blueprint.

The regulatory stretch is the one indie founders should sit with. Emily comes from the claims and compliance side, and her argument is that building for global compliance early costs less than reformulating for it later, and that a claim consumers will believe needs a study behind it.
