The new “Wuthering Heights” film directed by Emerald Fennell has brought the sweeping Gothic novel back into the public spotlight. Our intention is not to open a conversation about this particular adaptation, but rather to highlight the influence the three Brontë sisters - Charlotte, Emily, and Anne - have had on art and fashion over time.

Nearly 200 years have passed since their works were written, but their novels and their romantic Gothic atmosphere have remained a source of inspiration for renowned creators. Gothic aesthetics, Victorian dresses, the “dark academia” energy, and strong, passionate heroines are defining traits of the Brontë universe. Designers such as John Galliano, Erdem Moralıoğlu, Alexander McQueen, and Giorgio Armani - who presented an entire Haute Couture collection in SS16 inspired by the Yorkshire moors - have all found inspiration in the world created by these three women.

Their influence goes beyond collections inspired by dark romanticism; it also includes iconic musical pieces - Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights”- and ballet adaptations, such as Cathy Marston’s “Jane Eyre”.

Although “Jane Eyre” and “Wuthering Heights” are the most well-known of the sisters’ novels, our recommendation is not to overlook Anne Brontë’s “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall”, one of the first feminist novels, addressing subjects that were considered unspeakable in the first half of the 19th century.

Long story short: read the books. Always better than the movies.

P.S. Girls, just a quick reminder - there is also a “Wuthering Heights” adaptation in which Heathcliff is played by Tom Hardy.
