At the height of Thursday's storms, part of Third Avenue in Elizabeth was under feet of water thanks to a deluge of rain. Cars parked along the road at the time were underwater, and some still sat there a day later, lining the sidewalk and unable to start due to water damage.⁠

In a statement, the city told NBC New York "this is becoming more frequent and as a result of climate change, communities like Elizabeth may see more instances of severe rainfall and flooding in the future. The city has been addressing stormwater management for years and continues to invest in infrastructure to help these conditions." ⁠

But neighbors say more needs to be done.⁠
⁠
Officials said there were more than 100 water rescues involving vehicles that tried to go through flooded streets. No injuries were reported.⁠
