Former NAU fraternity leader Carter Eslick has pleaded guilty to felony hazing after 18-year-old Colin Martinez passed away from alcohol poisoning at an off-campus rush event.

Court documents say Martinez and three other students trying to join Delta Tau Delta were brought to the party with pillowcases over their heads.

The group was first told to finish a large bottle of vodka together, then reportedly given another bottle to make sure they threw up. Investigators believe the four consumed approximately 3.5 liters total.

Prosecutors say Eslick bought the alcohol and explained the drinking game. Around 3 a.m., someone at the house reportedly searched online for signs of alcohol poisoning, but police were not called until hours later.

Martinez was found unresponsive the next morning. His blood-alcohol level was 0.425%—more than five times the legal driving limit.

Although the felony charge can carry more than three years in prison, Eslick’s plea agreement calls for probation instead. A judge still has to approve the deal and determine his punishment.

Eslick could also be fined up to $150,000 and ordered to pay restitution to Martinez’s family. His sentencing is scheduled for September 30.

Three fraternity leaders were originally arrested, but Eslick was the only one indicted. The NAU chapter of Delta Tau Delta has since been shut down.

What do you think of the plea agreement?
