Her family asked police to check on her. By the time officers got there, investigators say her boyfriend was already on a flight out of the country.

Tucson police say 19-year-old Julissa Rubi Salazar was found deceased inside her apartment near the University of Arizona on Aug. 6 with obvious signs of trauma. One of her roommates told detectives Julissa had been planning to break up with her boyfriend, 20-year-old Varun Batchigari.

Investigators say Batchigari took Julissa’s phone and bank cards, used them to pay for a ride to Tucson International Airport, then flew to Houston and on to Germany with plans to continue to India.

While he was still traveling, the FBI’s Tucson office coordinated with its Berlin attaché. German authorities arrested Batchigari when he landed in Munich.

He is now awaiting extradition back to Pima County, where he faces warrants in connection with Julissa’s death and an alleged kidnapping. He has not been convicted.

Julissa was only 19 years old.
