He told two dispatchers he needed a welfare check. What he actually wanted was a family member’s location.

Apache Junction PD says an internal investigation found the officer used the department’s automated license plate reader system for something unrelated to any authorized police business. He asked two dispatchers to run the plate and framed it as official. They ran it, then realized something was off and took it to their supervisor. That’s the only reason any of this surfaced.

He was placed on administrative leave when the investigation opened and resigned before termination proceedings finished. Chief Michael Pooley is holding a briefing today at 1 to walk through what happened and what safeguards the department has on the system.

Four days ago the Pinal County sheriff announced he’s letting the county’s Flock contract lapse over Fourth Amendment concerns, and noted cities could keep running their own. Apache Junction is one of those cities. Nationally, at least two dozen officers across a dozen states have resigned or been arrested over misusing these systems.

Would you have caught it if you were the dispatcher?
