Sam Altman told TIME that OpenAI could have an internal system he would consider AGI by the end of 2026.

OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen reportedly described the company as roughly “80% of the way” there, while Greg Brockman suggested this period could eventually be remembered as the moment AGI was created.

That does not mean AGI has arrived. Even Altman said OpenAI is “not quite yet” at that point.

But the shift in language is hard to ignore.

For years, AGI was discussed as a distant theoretical milestone. Now the people building the most advanced systems are openly talking about it as something that could emerge inside their own labs within months.

If they are even close to right, 2026 may end up being remembered as a much bigger year in AI history than most people currently appreciate.
