No. 14 USC opened the 2026 season with a win at the Coliseum, taking down San José State 42–26.

The Trojans controlled the game almost immediately. Jayden Maiava capped a 13-play opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and USC eventually carried a commanding 28–0 lead into halftime. San José State managed only 102 total yards over the first two quarters. 

Maiava looked extremely efficient in his first game of the season, completing 25 of 29 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground. 

One of the biggest stories was the immediate impact of USC’s young playmakers.

True freshman Trent Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown in his college debut, while fellow freshman Kayden Dixon-Wyatt also hauled in a touchdown. Riley Wormley and Shahn Alston each recorded the first rushing touchdowns of their USC careers. 

USC eventually stretched the lead to 35–3 late in the third quarter, with new defensive coordinator Gary Patterson’s unit dominating San José State for most of the afternoon. 

The Spartans refused to completely go away.

New quarterback Luke Weaver helped San José State explode for 23 points in the fourth quarter, finishing 21-of-32 for 234 yards while accounting for three touchdowns. The late surge made the final score significantly closer after USC began turning to its backups. 

USC finished with a 505–336 advantage in total offense and walked out of Week 0 with a 42–26 victory.

It wasn’t a perfect finish, but for three quarters, the No. 14 Trojans looked every bit like a team expecting to contend for the College Football Playoff in 2026.
