The 2026 college football season is finally here.

After Indiana completed a perfect 16–0 season and captured its first national championship, the rest of the country enters 2026 looking to knock the Hoosiers off the top.

But the defending champions won’t even begin the season ranked No. 1.

Ohio State holds the top spot in the preseason AP Poll, followed by No. 2 Oregon, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 5 Texas. Indiana begins its title defense at No. 6.

The Buckeyes return quarterback Julian Sayin and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith as they attempt to bring the national championship back to Columbus.

Oregon enters with perhaps its best chance yet to capture the program’s first national title, led by returning quarterback Dante Moore.

Georgia remains firmly in the championship conversation under Kirby Smart, while Notre Dame brings back quarterback CJ Carr after narrowly missing the Playoff last season.

Texas, Miami, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama headline a loaded group of contenders behind them. The SEC leads the preseason AP Poll with nine ranked teams, while the Big Ten occupies the top two spots for only the second time in poll history. 

The Playoff race will look slightly different this year as well.

The CFP remains at 12 teams, but the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC champions are now guaranteed spots. The highest-ranked Group of Six team also receives an automatic bid, while Notre Dame is guaranteed a spot if it finishes inside the committee’s top 12. 

From Indiana trying to prove 2025 was no fluke, to Ohio State and Oregon battling atop the Big Ten, Georgia attempting to return to the summit and another loaded group of contenders chasing them…

The road to Las Vegas starts now.
