Since an August 11th storm, tens of thousands of residents in Gary, Indiana, have been without power. Schools shuttered. Grocery stores emptied. Workers are unable to travel to their jobs. Power isn’t expected to return until August 25th.

Gary is over 76% Black. So when a crisis like this drags on, we have to ask why the federal government failed to respond.

There’s another part to the story. There are 125 data centers in Indiana, with 8 in Gary, that have been straining the power grid for months. Now it failed in a storm.

Mutual aid is stepping up — NAACP Gary, Salvation Army, World Central Kitchen, local charities, and public figures are getting resources on the ground, plus $5,000 relief grants for impacted families.

Color Of Change was founded in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the government's failed response and the disproportionate devastation experienced by Black residents in New Orleans. The same is true now: Gary deserves better than this. Do not look away.
