## Caption

Gravel, silt, weed, clay. You can feel all four through a lead, and knowing which one you are on changes everything about how you fish it.

Gravel comes back sharp and juddery. Silt is a soft dull thump and the lead pulls out heavy. Weed is spongy and it grabs. Clay is a solid clean donk.

Five minutes of leading around tells you more about a swim than five hours of sitting in it.
