“Just a few years ago, there was the idea of a stereotypical dad look usually consisted of denim shorts, New Balance sneakers, socks with sandals, and higher-rise jeans,” writes imjasondiamond. “Then, in one of the oddest cases of cultural appropriation, style-conscious and young people started borrowing those looks and making them their own.”

Many of these people are now dads of young children, part of a new crop of fathers who take their style seriously: “Menswear Daddies,” as Diamond has dubbed them. They may exclusively wear well-tailored pants or have eBay alerts set for “Vintage ’80s Armani,” but in many cases, they hope their sartorial pursuits help shape their children’s relationship to self-presentation and creative freedom.
